Highlanders Defeat North Florida Warriors 31-20 in Inaugural Season Opener
OCALA, FL – The Dunedin Highlanders launched their inaugural season in electrifying fashion on Saturday, March 1, 2025, with a 31-20 victory over the North Florida Warriors at Brick City Football Field in Ocala. The game kicked off with an unforgettable moment and ended with the Highlanders proving they have what it takes to compete at the highest level of the EAFL AA division.
A Historic Start: Ambert’s Opening Kickoff Return
The game began with a bang, as kick returner Ricardo Ambert took the opening kickoff to the house for a touchdown. The explosive start put the Highlanders on the scoreboard immediately and set the tone for a dominant performance. Ambert wasn’t done there. He added another touchdown later in the game, earning Player of the Game honors for his performance. His all-around play helped lead Dunedin to victory and ensured his place in team history as one of its first-ever standout stars.
“I am reminded of the Bible verse James 1:2 that tells us to approach trials and hardships with a mindset of joy, not because the challenges themselves are enjoyable, but because enduring them can produce spiritual growth and perseverance. I just followed my blocks and stayed patient with that kickoff return TD. This was a team win, and we still must fix our mistakes, but I expect we get better week by week.” – Ricardo Ambert
Big Plays from the Offense
The Highlanders’ offense, led by quarterback Nate Munson, was equally impressive. Munson connected on two deep passes for touchdowns, one to Michael Minges and another to Johnell Barnes. These two big-play touchdowns demonstrated Munson’s ability to lead a high-powered offense and keep defenses guessing. His chemistry with his wide receivers will be crucial as the season progresses.
Highlanders’ Defense Makes Key Plays
On defense, the Highlanders rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Defensive backs Bryan Johnson and Miquel Myles-Moore both made crucial interceptions that disrupted the Warriors' offensive rhythm. The defensive line also stepped up, with key tackles from players like Marshall O’Brien, Ace Salam, and Nissan Taylor, providing staunch support and helping to keep the Warriors at bay.
Coach Scott Fisk’s halftime message was clear: tighten up defensively and finish the tackles. While the Highlanders were leading 24-14 at the break, Fisk emphasized the need for better alignment and discipline after the Warriors capitalized on a couple of alignment issues, scoring two touchdowns in the first half.
Warriors Fight Back, But Highlanders Hold Strong
The Warriors came out of halftime with renewed energy, adding another touchdown in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just 24-20. But the Highlanders’ defense buckled down in the final quarter, shutting out North Florida in the fourth period. The offense capitalized on the Warriors’ inability to score, adding one more touchdown to secure the 31-20 victory. The Highlanders' defense, alongside timely plays from the offense, proved to be the difference.
Perfect Night for Kicker Justin Lawrence
Kicker Justin Lawrence delivered a sensational performance in his Highlanders debut, displaying nerves of steel and flawless execution. He was perfect on the night, going 4-for-4 on extra point attempts and nailing 1-of-1 field goals. With a career-best 5-for-5 on all kicks, Lawrence’s consistency and poise under pressure played a key role in the Highlanders' victory, proving he is a reliable weapon in the special team’s unit.
Highlanders Take Down #1 Ranked Warriors
The victory not only marks the Highlanders' inaugural win but also serves as a statement to the league. By defeating the #1 ranked North Florida Warriors, the Highlanders now stand atop the EAFL AA division rankings. This win puts them in a great position early in the season, with momentum on their side as they look ahead to their next challenge.
Looking Ahead: St. Petersburg Chargers at Home
Next up for the Highlanders is a home matchup against the St. Petersburg Chargers. The Chargers, who have yet to play a game this season, will be looking to prove themselves in a heated contest between two teams from Pinellas County.
While the Highlanders will be favored, Coach Fisk and his team understand that the job is far from over. With an explosive offense, a solid defense, and special teams that executed flawlessly, the Highlanders will look to build on this win as they continue their quest for greatness in their inaugural season.
The Dunedin Highlanders have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with, but the road to the top is just beginning. With a win under their belt, they now set their sights on their next opponent, aiming to keep the momentum rolling as they host the St. Petersburg Chargers this Saturday at Freedom Field.
